I read in a column somewhere grapefruit is a no no on RA drugs, can anyone tell me why this is so. Is it just for some people or is it aimed at all, I would be interested to find out why. Thanks Lorna x

I did't know that. I used to swallow my drugs with grapefruit juice for years. I thought it was drugs like statins that you shouldn't take with grapefruit juice?

I've heard this too. There are other foods as well that we're supposed to avoid such as mushrooms. I've always adopted the attitude that everything in moderation ...

Hi Lorna,

Grapefruit Juice can increase or block the effects of some RA drugs, which in turn could lead to a greater risk of side effects.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4753747.stm

And a table of some of the drugs affected

http://ukpmc.ac.uk/artic...type=table&id=t1-25

If you're on Prednisolone

Grapefruit juice
Taking methylprednisolone with grapefruit juice has been shown to delay the absorption and increase the blood concentration of the drug.32 The mechanism by which grapefruit juice increases the concentration of methylpredniolone in the blood is not known, but it is suspected that it may interfere with enzymes in the liver responsible for clearing the drug from the body. In certain people, grapefruit juice may, therefore, enhance the effects of methylprednisolone. The combination should be avoided unless approved by the prescribing doctor.

So best to be on the safe side and not have grapefruit if you're unsure, or have a word with your GP Rheumatology team.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the replies. Its not a juice I would normally drink, I like fresh orange, or lemonade and lime. But I did have it on holiday in France, I drunk some of it and my husband finished it. Was just curious as to why. Lorna Smile

I didn't know it affects RA drugs. It's doesn't say anything specific on the patient information leaflets but it does specifically say not to eat/drink grapefruit in my Felodipine blood pressure tablet leaflet.

Yes, it's the same with lots of drugs, not to drink grapefruit juice. I think it can make the effects of some drugs much stronger in the system, so best avoided. Shame, I like grapefruit juice, but I don't drink it now.
